Kenyan MPs visit the Academy

A five-men-delegation of Kenyan MPs visited Somaliland to assess the state of affairs of the country with regard to the democratization process and the prevalence of peace and stability. The delegation was lead by Kabete MP Paul Muite, the Chairman of the Judiciary Sub-committee of the Kenyan Parliament. Among its members were: Jimmy Choge, Maoka Maore, Patrice Ivuti and Oloo Aringo. Apart from meeting the different stakeholders in the country, the Kenyan MPs also paid a visit to the Academy on December 21, 2006. Furthermore, the Speaker of Somaliland’s House of Representatives, the First Deputy Speaker and some parliamentarians participated in the meeting.

The delegation visited the Academy on the request of the Academy’s management. The Chairman of the Board of Directors, other Members of the Board and the Management received the MPs, toured the premises of the Academy, and briefed them on the establishment of the organisation, its activities and accomplishments and the challenges ahead for Somaliland. The Kenyan delegation was impressed to watch APD’s documentary film on the 2005 Somaliland Parliamentary Elections. The MPs praised the Academy for its role and accomplishments. They asserted that the issues raised in the film were of concern in Kenya, too, especially the distribution of seats amongst the different parts and identities of the country, as well as the gender issue.

In his conclusive remarks, the head of the delegation stated that "The Academy is the missing link in the Kenyan context."
