Land-based Conflicts Project 2008: Phase II

In collaboration with the Institute for Development and Peace (INEF) at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, the Academy for Peace and Development (APD) conducted a six months research project on land-based conflict in Somaliland between July and December 2007, funded by the German Institute of Foreign Relations (IFA). The intention of the project on land based conflicts was a subject to policy proposal and practical follow-up aiming at enhanced natural resource management and conflict resolution practices.

Recently, the second phase of the project started in April 2008 which will continue up to December 2008. The project envisaged can build on the achievements of the forerunner project in 2007, but will provide opportunities to extend the focus both in terms of thematic and geographical scope.

In project 2008, priority will be given the following up on the work on rural land conflicts. At the same time, extension to urban land conflicts remains highly desirable, albeit challenging. Therefore, in addition to the core activities on rural land conflicts, the project will explore and as far as possible develop an entry points to issues of urban land conflicts. Based on the existing body of experience in Somaliland, the project will therefore place great emphasis on the dialogue component in 2008. The introduction of participatory video, the production of documentary film, and its usage in dialogue activities form part of this effort.
