Local Government Stakeholders Workshop

On May 24th -26th, a three days local government stakeholder’s workshop was held in Borama, the capital region of Awdal. The purpose of the workshop was to create a local government that is responsive, accountable and transparent. It was also meant to improve the relationship between the local government and the public so that they can work together on the service delivery to the citizens.

Around thirty people from different categories of the society including the business people, traditional elders, intellectuals, university of Amoud, elected councillors, local government staff , minority, women groups and the civil society.

The public participants and the local council members have expressed their appreciation of the workshop because this first that they ever come together and discuss possible collaboration regarding local government and its citizens.
After three days of discussions, the participants had finally come up with solutions to address over the issues of stakeholders collaborations in the future. Following are some of the key points that came out:

  • Local government should organize public forums in which they can address the citizens
  • Local government should open their meetings to the public
  • Local government should come up with mechanism to disseminate information to the public such news letter, radio or T V programs etc
  • The public, particularly the citizens should organize neighbourhoods so that it makes easer to make contact with local government
  • Associations of different categories should also be established such petty traders, milk, meat, vegetable and qaad sellers, buses and vendors of flee market.
