APD Holds Workshop to Improve Cooperation Between Local Council & Stakeholders

(HARGEISA, SOMALILAND – SEPTEMBER 4, 2008) The Academy for Peace and Development (APD) conducted a two-day workshop on cooperation mechanisms between the local council and its stakeholders including the media and civil society at Ambassador Hotel from August 29-30, 2008.

The workshop, which was part of a series of workshops held in Boorame, Berbera, Burao, and Ceerigabo, was ceremonially inaugurated by Eng. Hussein Mohamed Jiciir, the Mayor of Hargeisa. The Mayor in his opening speech highlighted the good cooperation between the local council and the public.

Also speaking at the opening session, APD’s Programme Coordinator Mr. Boobe Yusuf said he hoped the workshop would help local authorities, civil society and the media to work together in order to solve the challenges faced by the local community such as water shortage and pollution due to improper disposal of garbage.

Ms. Su’ad Ibrahim, Lead Researcher of APD’s Decentralization Entry-Point, expressed the organization’s objectives of using experiences gained through the local council elections to achieve future success.

The workshop was well attended by representatives of the parliament, members of Hargeisa’s local council, the media and civil society.

The workshop is one of APD’s many initiatives to promote sustainable peace and development in Somaliland.
