APD Commemorates International Peace Day

(HARGEISA, SOMALILAND-SEPTMEBER 21, 2008) The Academy for Peace and Development in collaboration with the Youth Movement for Democracy (YMD) conducted a workshop and training for youth at Mansoor Hotel in Hargeisa to commemorate International Peace Day. Officials from the ministries of Interior and Justice attended the event.

The Peace of Art workshop was conducted by local artist, Abdi Qani and was attended by more than 30 primary, intermediate and secondary school students from Hargeisa. The workshop highlighted the importance of peace and gave the students an opportunity to express themselves creatively on the topic.

Three prizes were given out to those students who displayed creativity and teamwork while all students were awarded with Certificates of Achievement. Completed artwork are on display at the APD Hargeisa office.

Simultaneously, a training programme on how the youth can articulate their grievances was held for youth from the five districts of Hargeisa. The training which was attended by more than 150 youth was facilitated by Carl Conradi. A Fellow from conflict management institution Insight Collaborative (Boston USA), Carl is currently stationed at APD as an intern. Mohamed Gaani, APD Lead Researcher co-facilitated the workshop.
